What is $12.50 worth to you?
  • What is $12.50 worth to you? Is it worth your reputation,
    your integrity?

I made a bet with a couple of regulars several weeks ago.
We were speculating how many runners our local casino would get for the main
event in a new tournament series. The regular on my right (let's call him 'W')
said they will sell out, I said no way they would. This is the first year they
are running this tournament series, the ME is a $1100 NLHE freezeout tournament.
So we were debating back and forth, and I said I set the O/U at 100, and I will
take the under if anyone is interested. W asked how much I want to bet. I told
him let's do $50 just for fun. The other regular on my left (let's call him 'A')
jumped in and said he will take the $50 bet. I told A that I offered the bet to
W first, so I said how about if they split the action, and I will book $25 with
each of them, they both agreed and I shook hands with each of them, while
repeating that the bet is for $25 each.

Fast forward to last night, the
ME event happened about 10 days ago, they got <70 runners so I won the bet
handily. I haven't seen 'A' or 'W' since the ME, till last night. 'A' sat down
next to me at a 1/3 game. A little bit into the game, I reminded him of the bet,
and he immediately said he will settle the bet before he leaves for the night. A
short while later he had to buy something off another player at the table, and
he asked me to change a hundred and pay me the $25 at the same time, so all is
    cool.

About an hour later, 'W' showed up at the table. 'A' said to me
"there he is", and he called 'W' over to tell him to settle the bet. 'W' sat
down at our table, took the empty seat and started to play. When 'A' told him
about paying me, 'W' got this look on his face ( I can see his gears cranking),
then said to 'A' the bet was for $25 between the both of them, and said 'A' got
screwed by paying both their shares. I thought may be 'W' was joking, and
corrected him. He then said it a couple of more times, and I didn't want to keep
pressing across the poker table. An hour later my son showed up at the casino
(we car pooled) after his classes, so I packed up my chips and walked over to
'A' and asked if he could settle up the bet because I had to go. Once again he
said it was for $12.50, and grabbed $13 in chips from his stack to give to me. I
once again told him it was for $25 each, and asked if he was serious about this.
He confirmed that he was, and I told him I can't believe he is trying to weasel
out of $12.50. He that told me to f-off, he is playing poker here. Wow, I can't
believe what I just heard, so I told him to keep the money, I don't need his
    $25.

It is unbelievable, this guy isn't poor, he owns a car dealership
and always seemed to have lots of money to play with. What a douche bag. I was
actually thinking of talking to him about a vechicle, since one of our cars died
over the weekend (engine is blown). Am I ever glad this happened. If he is ready
to screw me over $12.50, who knows what he would do if I deal with him over
bigger items. Who was he kidding, who would make a bet for $12.50? Are we still
    in elementary school?

From now on, he will forever be known as 'W' the
Weasel to me. Thank you 'W' for showing
your true colour for $12.50. You can keep my $25. I've come across some scummy
people in my life, but no one has ever tried to screw me over for something so
little. You top my all time scumbag list.

No amount of money is ever worth having your gambling credit revoked. I've lent and been lent $100- $500, no problems, and no questions asked plenty. i believe 1st time I met James P. at edgewater, i shot him $200 without a thought. Most folks on the old 604 board were very credible based on posting.

One day you may see Mr. "W" , looking for a gambling stake or trying to sell off pieces of himself. Make sure to get your $12.50 worth at that point by being loud and vocal and telling how his true colors are.

For some reason who would you rather be? Say you get stuck in Vegas at WSOP time, and your cpu, wallet and all money credit cards are stolen? You know around 10 people in Vegas that are there.

Bad on his word Mr. W is stuck selling water on the walkways between Bellagio and Caesars. Good on his word Pokerdogg is spotted a few hundred, and given the spare bed or couch to sleep on.

This also applies to favors for people. I'm owed a ton more favors than I've ever gotten back. But when I have ever been stuck for a ride, or needed a couple folks to help me move, folks are there. Some people in life are all give and no take while others are the opposite.

If i owed you the $25 , I would pay you $30, as it had been a week, and would feel bad about not squaring up. Mr. "W" is an idiot for a $12.50 screwjob, but he's probably done many more for larger $$$$.

  • Hey

Just to be clear, I do not know any of the people involved and have no idea of the tone anyone took during these discussions. From the amount of the wager it does not seem to me that "W" is trying to weasel out of half his wager. If "W" really believes that his half of the wager was $12.50 your actions would seem as crazy to him as his actions are to you.

  • I believe it was very clear how much we wagered initially.  I was very clear that I wanted to bet $50, and when 'A' wanted to take the action, I offered 'W' half of it.  'A' and 'W' were on either side of me at the poker table when the bet was made, and I confirmed cleared that each person is betting $25 against me before we shook hands.

In addition, when this happened two nights ago, it was clear to me from the way 'W' responded, he was trying to get 'A' to buy into his story.  A normal, upstanding guy would ask 'A' if the bet was really for $25 each.  Instead, he was trying to make it sound like 'A' got duped and that I had scammed 'A', and is now trying to scam 'W' for $25.  Oh yeah, he kept saying he had it on tape, LMAO.

You weren't there to see what happened, but it was pretty obvious to me he was trying to weasel out of his half of the wager.  Believe me, if 'W' really seemed like he was mistaken about the wager amount, I would have let him off the hook and took the $12.50.  In fact, I would have refunded $12.50 to 'A' to make it fair to him also.  But, based on my read, this was a clear attempt to weasel out of the bet.  You can play devil's advocate all you want, but that's my read and I'm sticking with it.

PilyinPhil says..."From the amount of the wager it does not seem to me that "W" is trying to weasel out of half his wager"

If you don't know 'W', I don't know on what basis can you make this statement.  People have been known to kill for less.

  • Sorry but I think this is Funny cause I know who "W" is and his little Asian side kick. Was he boozing or something ? I think maybe he was trying to Tilt you for the game, I saw him intentionally expose a card in Krazy pineapple the other nite when he flop the joint. flop 5,6,7- He has 7,8,9 in his hand and he bounced the 7 on the flop to expose and says oops I hope that card doesn't effect any decisions.

  • No, he was stone sober, he just got to the casino.  I don't think he was trying to tilt me, and especially not when I had racked up my chips and left my seat.

This is the same guy who was really irate a few weeks ago because someone slow rolled him preflop with AA.  Well, about two years ago, he did exactly the same thing to me.  I limped in late position with 1010 (I think there was a button abuser I wanted to trap).   'W' was next to me and made a sizeable raise.  I don't remember exactly my stack size, but it was kind of short, a bit short to set mine in any case, and happy to get it all in preflop if he had AK/AQ type hand.  I shoved and 'W' start asking me if I was slow playing a big pair, basically giving me a hard time about sandbagging him, etc., etc.  After a full minute of this, he calls, and then waited till I turned over my pocket 10s, he flipped over Aces.

His Asian side kick, he is a piece of work too.  I agree, this whole situation is kind of funny.  I love it when someone makes themselves look bad.  He just painted a big bull's eye on his stack.  Not that I would ever soft play him, but now I am motivated to punish him just a little bit harder.

  • 1) dont make bets with strangers if your gonna flip out if they dont pay up.
    2) what is $12 worth to you?  you are also ruining your rep by flying off the handle over $12
    3) make your post title more accurate.  The guy gave you $13 so you are "owed" only $12 :P (just being a dick here, good for lulz?)
    4) Give the guy the benefit of the doubt.  Obv if it happened before then its your fault for betting him and if it happens again then its your fault for betting him.  Ive had many occasions where i forgot ppl owed me money, forgot i owed ppl money, or they forgot i owed them money.  It all works out in the end unless you are getting mega scammed by someone.  If we dont agree on the dollar amount that is owed then we split the difference.
    5) if he really wanted to freeroll you he woulda tried to bet more. how is a scammer top of your list over $12?
  • 1) he isn't exactly a stranger.  We are all regulars in the poker room for the past few years

    2) not sure why you thought I flew off the handle.  I calmly asked him to settle the bet, and when he told me to f-off, I said he can keep the money and I left.  I didn't even raised my voice the whole time.  This post was written a day after the event, after I've had a chance to reflect on what happened.  I've tried to be as factual as I possible can.

    3) pretty sure he was going to ask for 50cents back, lulz

    4) this is the first time I've made a bet with him, it will never happen again

    5) I never said he is the top scammer.  I said he topped the list of scumbags I've come across.  May be I've lived a blessed life and didn't have to deal with a lot of bad people :)  Ok, may be I was exagerating a little, may be he doesn't deserve to be on the top of the list, may be just the top 5.

For me it isn't about the money, it is the principle that matters.  I do not like to be taken advantage of.  I didn't write this post to get sympathy or retribution.  I actually wrote this initially in my (pseudo) blog elsewhere, but I decided to cross post it here because it happened in the local scene.  I choose to not use names to protect the innocent (or presumed innocent).  May be this whole thing was a fictional cautionary tale.  You are welcome to take whatever you want from this, or not.

  • I have always said, live poker is great, except for the people.
  • PokerDogg say hi next time so I know who you are pls Thanks man, Run well
  • Sure.  How would I identify you?  You can PM me if you want.
  • Hey, look man like I told you, I only bet $12.50.  Too bad you didn't want to take it.

    j/k

Shitty situation, I hate guys like that.  Chalk it up as a real cheap lesson to find out the type of guy he is.
  • Its a super sized big mac meal at McDonalds with a mcflurry. I wouldn`t worry about $12.50. I would`ve still taken his $13 and not done anymore bets with him. If it was a bet for over $100 I`d probably start getting pissed off.

Howdy, Stranger!
