Coaching/Working on Improving Poker Game Together
  • Hey guys I'm single and out of school for basically the first time since I started playing poker seriously in September so I'm really motivated to improve and start making a bit of money. If anybody with a bit of coaching experience wants to help coach me a bit let me know. I think with the exception of a couple luckbox scores I'm pretty much a breakeven player and I really want to start being a consistent winner. if someones on the same page as me and wants to improve as well I'm willing to work with you and share my strategies and go over hand histories together.

My plan is to review several tournament hand histories and get opionions on specific plays and on my overall play like whether I play too loose, bluff too much or not enough etc.

  • yeah I strongly consider hiring a coach. Something about paying 50-100 dollars an hour makes you really make sure you get your moneys worth. Sure training videos and books are great. IMO nothing hammers down the facts better than some 1 on 1 coaching. Coaching gives you amazing clarity and confidence because your learning from a BETTER player.

FYI I used to be a breakeven player. I'm now a solid to great reg. I'm sure with some more coaching and a little bit of hard work I can truly be crushing.
  • Which coach did you use?
  • got coaching from a cardrunners pro. one of the unexpected good things about black friday is now a lot of coaching rates are 50% off from what they were pre black friday. you can also check out twoplustwo coaching forums. you will find what your looking for there.
  • okay cool thanks man I think I'll try it out.
  • Hey Ricky,  you should come by the edgewater, I play the 1/2NL game there most nights after work for 2-3 hours before I head home.

Been running really hot, seems like a lot of 2 5 NL regs will play 1 2 and splash around so if you get on the right table there is some money to be made.

Anyway let me know, im probaly goin be there around 530 tomorrow

  • Hey Matt I only play tournaments, you won't see me around a cash table in a while I'm terrible lol.
  • Hey Ricky, I just got home from the Edgewater, ive seen you play before ...and your definitely better then 80% of the people you will see play 1/2NL there.

There is so much straddling and over aggressive stuff going on that a short stack strategy is really profitable. The 1/2NL there is min 100 max 300, if your patient enough and willing to be bored to death for a few hours im sure you could have some good results.

Not sure what your bankroll is like but you should at least take $500 and take a shot. That would give you 5 buy ins.

It woudnt be a very good deal for you to accept this, but ill even buy 50% of your action on each short buy where I take my original buy in back, plus 50% of your winnings after you cash out. We would have to talk a bit more about how I would want you to play before we made a arrangement though.

Screw tournament poker, we cant all run like JamesP :)

  • I once staked a young James P. at the Edgewater... Ahh so many years ago....
  • Thanks for the confidence Matt maybe one day I will give it a shot. I would need to do a bit of reading up on cash game strategy first though. I think I'm going to get a job soon and will have some money but right now I don't have the bankroll for it.

  • Wondering if anyone wants to talk about certain tournament strategies. Example, 5 handed in a winner take all tournament, I am a big chip leader, and put in a sizable raise with TT, my opponent goes all in. I'm a little uncertain what he has (my first thought is AK), ultimately I decide if I am wrong, and he has a bigger pair, I will still have about half my stack, and will be in 2nd place in chips. Nightmare, he has AA. I luck out and nail 4 spades on the board for a flush......I then take a well deserved verbal beating, but thats the bonus of having a monster stack in my opinion....comments, opinions, suggestions.....
  • Once it's 5H, and it's winner take all, I think it's a straight ICM calc with his weighed range.  So plug in the equity calcs with TT vs his range (i.e. AK,QQ+, or AK,AQ,99+, etc) and it's straightforward math.  I think with TT I would either raise smaller/fold or if I did put in a sizable raise I would almost always call.

If it is the same guy that 3-bet shoved you a couple of thems when you were 6 handed, I would snap call.  Regardless, I think I would call 90% of the time 5 handed with TT and a big stack.
  • I have never plugged in equity calculations, but I'm thinking he has any pair or 2 overcards. Reality...I only call if I'm small stack or big stack. I fold if I have medium stack here.....Dogg, it was a different guy that raised, but the guy that 3 bet shove me every time I raised, was heads up against me at the end, based on his play I altered my play at the end and it worked very well....because of his agression I opted to limp preflop everytime to counter him, and he chose wrong every time on me.
