Hello Jason, thank you very much for opening this line of communication to us. I agree with you that there is a lot of potential woth the Playnow poker site, especially given what just happened in the US. I have to be honest I haven't spent a lot of time using the cash game feature, and only about a dozen sessions with the tournament games. Here are some of my first impressions.
Without knowing the software architecture, I don't know for sure how difficult some of these change requests might be, but I will start off with mostly user interface (UI) changes that I think should be relatively easy to implement.
Part 2:
Other features
Overall I find the poker table graphics a bit cluttered and hard to read some of the text, especially for older users. A good UI designer should be able to help on that. It may be as simple as use of different fonts and colour scheme.
On the marketing side of things, it would be great if there can be some synergy between the local casinos and Playnow. How about running satellites for the live tournaments, like the high buyin monthly tournaments at Riverrock and boulevard, and the various yearly tournament series. Trust and security is something you can sell with Playnow, especially in light of recent events with Stars and Full Tilt.
I think I will stop for now. I would love to attend the meeting with you and Kirk. I spent my previous professional life in software team/project management, before playing poker full time, I would love to give my 2 cents on this.
p.s. I am in the middle of renovating our house, so I need at least a day's notice if that is at all possible. Thx.
it is unreal to me how the major problems on this site have not been adressed. How can you let 2 people playing on THE SAME IP ADDRESS sit at the same cash game table. At least make those who want to collude use msn or something like that in order to do so. You have the perfect opportunity to steal a whole bunch of traffic from FTP because of all the black friday nonsense yet you dont even give a shit enough to try and do something about it. Yes its good that you are in the forums trying to listen to the players on what they want but focusing all your attention on minor problems and not fixing the major ones is absolutely retarded. Look at stars and just do exactly what they do. Its not that hard to realize that in order for your site to GROW and not be giving away thousands of dollars every week in overlay you need some things to change.
1) MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO SIT AT THE SAME CASH GAME TABLES ON THE SAME IP ADDRESS!!!!!!!!!! This is a major problem but noone seems to give a shit.
2) FIX YOUR GODDAM REWARDS SYSTEM. You are pushing away a ton of traffic based on the simple fact that the micro stakes are impossible to beat with the rake structure and rakeback system that you have employed. You dont NEED rakeback in the form of money just copy stars VIP system. Award more points/$ rake to those players that put in a higher volume. You say that rakeback is getting phased out by most online sites but they have a point system that is basically the same thing. Stars has no rakeback but their VIP system does much better than that. Merge no longer is opening new rakeback accounts but you get a different % back based on your VIP status + other benefits as you climb higher. With their highest teir i think its around 75% rakeback or cashback or whatever they call it. Make the fish feel like they win something once in a while and not just keep losing then redepoing more. They will get the impression online poker is rigged cuz they never win. Stars does a great job at this with their points system. It gives the losing grinder fish a chance to get play outta their money and maybe get something cool for "free" like a big tourny seat or a watch or some other bullshit.
3) PREFERED SEATING. Without it multitabling is almost impossible.
4) GET RID OF 5 TABLE MAX. with only 5 tables being the max you can play it makes people multisite and put in volume somewhere else. Why is that a good business model? Why do you want players to put in a little volume at your site and most of it on other sites?
5)EITHER GET RID OF GAMES 5/10 AND UP OR MAKE THE MAX LOSS HIGHER. Who in their right mind would play 25/50 with a max loss of 60bb? Only those that wanna GAMBLE and FLIP their money. Isnt that what you want to stay away from?
6) UNREGISTRATION FROM TOURNYS YOU SATTY INTO. Whether it be cash into your account or tourny $ only usable for tournys. This will help get rid of some overlay in the satties. Who wants to play a satty into a tourny they may not be able to play?
7) SCHEDUALED BREAKS AT XX:55. Make it consistent with the other major sites. Nothing more tilting than it being breaktime on sunday and having one stupid table still playing and getting a break randomly.
Ya its good right now for players who are taking advantage of overlays, the fish that play on the site, and the softness of games comparatively. But its not going to last forever. The fish will get sick of losing their money and having to play 5fpp tournys to try and get it back 50 cents at a time. Once the fish leave so will the other grinders. And once the fish leave they wont be back. As it is right now i still stand on my POV that government regulated online poker is probably the WORST thing for poker in the long run. They dont give a shit about the players and will do whatever they can to take all the money outta the poker economy by charging ridiculous rake and offering nothing back. This site is NOT sustainable in the state that it is in. Actually try and make a site where the games will be good and you actually care about the grinders and you will make way more money than you are now. Do better advertising than "win a free seat at WSOP" because yes you will have a bunch of new signups but noone is gonna play. Run cheap satelites into local live events. (obv if its for BC casinos make them BC friendly times and vice versa for Quebec) You dont have to do everything but DO SOMETHING other than "oh the __________ was won by a guy from BC." OBV IT WAS WON BY A GUY FROM BC CUZ 604 FUCKING OWNZ.
Oh and also sorry to all those who are crushing on this site the way it is. I dont wanna make the games/overlays worse for you just my opinion on some stuff thats been tilting me lately. if BCLC keeps having a ton of overlay on every tourny the site will die in the long run. Stars doesnt have overlay on any of their big tournys and they are still very good.
Feel like I have to weigh in on this discussion:
PokerStars player - 300,000+ hands played
Current stats on PlayNow - 30+bb/100 with 5000+ hands played
There are some good points above but here is my 2 cents as it appears this is the only place on the web for discussion of this stuff:
The Good:
Deposit/withdrawal is super easy...an obvious plus nowadays
Support is responsive...also an obvious plus nowadays
The fish swim in schools...it's like 5+ years ago on this site
I rarely play MTT's but the selection/overlays look decent
The Neutral:
Software looks like it is from 5+ years ago too...but I am on the fence with this one. While multitbling can be difficult and things such as preferred seating are great...do I really want all that stuff? Do I want a bunch of people like me or do I want some Roulette fish to put down his 20 bucks and play poker? There is an argument here on both sides...a big part of me just wants to shut up and keep stackin' chips...
The Bad:
Number one has to be the collusion/softplay/same IP issue. This isn't even debatable. They are easy to spot and abuse but that's not the point.
And #1 for me...the lack of any incentive and useless PXP's. Even one level of "PlayNow Players" or something with a higher PXP or lower rake or something would be enough. It doesn't have to be elaborate to make me happy...but with that comes the PXP issue...I rarely play MTT's as I said which makes those points 100% useless...you MUST make them convertible to cash or have a small store with a few gift cards or something or else they are just nonsense. The rake is high to begin with but the casino fish make up for that, but useless points and no VIP or incentive levels of any kind make me just keep withdrawing to boost my bankroll elsewhere...I would like the opportunity to play on a government regulated/safe/secure/fishy site but it's just not where it needs to be.
Thanks for listening... ;-P
Hello all,
Jason here, manager of PlayNow Poker. I am here because I see great value in engaging you, the knowledgeable poker players that play on our platform.
Let me start by saying that I completely understand that there are deficiencies in our software; I can assure you that I am working towards resolution where possible, in a prioritized order. Stars and Tilt have incredible software, no disputing that from anyone. We made a choice to go with a platform that was willing to pull out of the Canadian market for a number of reasons, one being what we are seeing transpire over the last 48 hours. Major market players were not willing to do that; our vendor choice was and is willing to make changes to their software that we feel we need to compete. It will take time.
We have a tremendous marketing team and also brought in a very experienced player development/retention manager with a strong poker background. Over the course of the last few weeks we have been working to secure strategic partnerships and build a foundation for the future. We have a very strong relationship with the World Series of Poker and begin satellites in a few weeks. We strongly support BC teams and the Canucks, Whitecaps and Lions tournaments are here to stay.
I am familiar with some of you on here already; some have been more destructive than constructive on your communication approach. I expect criticism and comments but I am here to improve the site and make a better experience for BC poker players.
We are planning a store in the future, I can’t commit to a date but it is in the plans.
Rakeback in the form of PXP’s is currently at 4%. That number will not look much different in the near future. At this point we have decided to instead put a large amount into overlays and prizing/promotions in order to populate the site.
The BBJ 50% ($240k) and 25% ($120k) shares were both BC players!
Beermankirk mentioned that I would be meeting with him; I will open it to any of you that wish to attend and constructively contribute. I will make arrangements with him for probably next week as it’s a little hectic with recent events, and post the place and time on here for those interested.
All the best at the tables.
Thanks beermankirk, I appreciate the welcome.
One other thing I would lke to clarify, the WSOP draw. It will be drawn from all of the entrants in ALL of the 'Nucks for a Buck tournaments, not just this Sunday. Still tremendous value as it is completely dependent on the Canucks season; the tournaments end on the Sunday after the Canucks season ends (hopefully about 10 weeks). If you play five of them, you are entered five times, etc.
Hope this clarifies.
JamesP - I understand completely about the right/left comments and communication and I agree. We have made mistakes and have had communication issues with our partner in Quebec. We are better in the last few weeks since launch.
English only won't happen as we are Government operated and our friends in Quebec need a voice! Translating software would be far down the line in prioirty, but I can assure you that chat is monitored for collusion, etc.
Zoop - I know rakeback will be an issue, especially for cash players. This is an issue that has become very large in the poker community in the last year. From a player standpoint I always want 'free' money back, from a business standpoint it is a business model that does not work in conjunction with other marketing tools such as store, affiliate programs, ticketing and promotions. You have seen most sites phasing out rakeback recently; I believe that will be the industry norm. We will have a stronger rewards system in the coming months, including a store that does strongly support BC options such as weekend getaways at casinos and resorts, ski lift tickets, restuarant gift certificates, our partners in the Canucks/Lions/Whitecaps, etc. The plan is to be the initial 'go to' option for events and options. This will take time to plan but is in the works.
Waiting times are something that we minimize from every angle, it's one of our competitive advantages. Cashouts are almost instant and we have had ticket winners attend games the next day; this is what we consider to be essential in this area.
Startup costs are not at all being factored into our business decisions at this point, that was an investment in infrastructure that we are not looking to recoup in any other way than general revenues.
I have not met beermnakirk yet, but I can agree that he will at least make a 'communicative' spouse. Maybe we could have a 'Win a Date with Beermankirk Tournament'. :)
I have meetings tomowrrow and Tuesday with our software company and Quebec, keep the suggestions and comments coming.
Hi Jason,
I spoke several times to Gerard Potrais regarding increasing the daily loss limits. He had your compliance department increase my personal limits several times yet the software itself would never accept said new limits. Gerard said that this would be fixed shortly (or brought to the attention of the software techs) and I was wondering how the process is going?
+1 on making it easier to sign up. I too had difficulty signing up. The first time when Playnow.com started, before poker was available. I gave up after running into problems, and couldn't get any help from support. The second time I tried again when poker became available. There were some problems with the credit card, and it took several attempts and a couple of hours to finally get it fixed. A more casual player who is curious about the site might have given up.
I have played in most of the medium and big poker sites, some of smaller sites, and a number of online sportbooks and casinos (probably well over 100 in total). I think Playnow.com ranked right at the top in terms of difficulty in opening up my account.
On the flip side, withdrawing money from the site probably ranked right at the top in terms of ease. I wish all sites are like this.
Perhaps you are trying too hard to make people gamble responsibly. :)
p.s. Jason, if you haven't seen my other two posts about your software, please take a look at the top (if your page is set to sort by votes). Thx.
PlayNow said:Funds transfer between players - will not happen for a number of reasons. Collusion, money laundering, undeground commerce, integrity of events - negatives far outweight the positives.
Jamesp said:Didnt sell anything this week, was feeling it. Cashed in SM too in like 439th place for about $440.
A couple of more updates:
-Our software platform is going to look further into the language mix and explore what, if anything, can be done to remedy the concerns
-PokerDogg - I understand your point regarding the funds transfers, but I would certainly prefer not to make it easier for the small percentage with darker motives.
-JamesP - players playing more than five tables is not in our plans; that is not the target market. You suggested Facebook as an area for random discussions; that is what we are here for on weaktight!
-Rewards store is a priority for the network. Our intention is to make it awesome, while supporting BC businesses.
The software loss limit thing is a huge pain... i was told it was going to be looked into about a month ago but it seems nothing has changed.
and apologies for personally mentioning a playnow employee's name. Said employee has been nothign but helpful to me and genuinely made an effort to address my issue. It seems that it's the software vendors/technicians are the ones that are dragging their feet.
Sorry for the absence! WSOP has been all-consuming.
JamesP - late registration is being fixed, should be changed shortly.
Koost - No worries, I appreciate the comments.
Invictus1 - Loss limits are there as a Responsible Gaming initiative and are mandatory. I believe this will be a requirement in any regulated jurisdiction going forward - and should be. To be able to make immediate changes to your limits within filled timeframes goes completely against the essence of the program and the protection it is meant to offer. That being said, we are working to make explain it clearer upon registration as there is some confusion regarding the parameters.
Mucked cards - in the next fix, coming very soon.
Auto top-up - aware of this, but not high on the priority list compared to other more pressing, greater-scale items.
Ratholing - sent inquiries, waiting to see where we can fit into the fix.
I also promised that I would meet up with anyone who was interested; I am available next Tuesday, May 10th at 3pm. I will leave it up to you as a group if that works and where to meet. Out of respect for beermankirk's efforts, I say we let him pick the location!
